Car Accident Ends in Familys Swimming Pool

A speeding car crashed through a backyard fenced and ended up in a St. Petersburg family’s swimming pool. According to Ivanka Chotreva, the car crashed just inches away from where she was doing yard work. St. Petersburg police say that an accident at a near by intersection caused the driver of the car to lose control, which resulted in the car crashing through an enclosure before plunging into the residential swimming pool.

The Driver

Ivanka said that when the driver got out of the car, he was not very concerned about the damage that he might have caused to lives and property. She said that his first concern was that he was worried that he would go to jail for a DUI and was most concerned about what would happen to himself. Ivanka was very disappointed that this reckless driver showed so little concern for the safety of her and her family. The driver was charged with careless driving, but he did not exhibit signs of intoxication so he was not tested for driving under the influence.

Close Call for Potential Victims

Aside from Ivanka, who narrowly dodged injury when the car crashed inches away from where she was doing yard work, there were children who also narrowly avoided physical injury from this out-of-control car. Shannon Gierke was standing outside with her 4-month-old son just minutes before the accident. According to Shannon, the noise was “crazy loud.” The family’s new pool was just finished being built one day earlier, and their 14-year-old daughter was inside getting ready to take a swim. If the accident had occurred just minutes later, the 14-year-old could have been subjected to serious physical injuries.

Pool Safety

Although accidents like these are very hard to avoid or predict, there are some precautions that families can take if you decide to install a residential pool. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests several pool safety precautions that families should observe. For example, you should always watch your children when they are in or near a pool. You should also keep children away from pool drains, pipes, and other openings to avoid entrapment. There should always be a portable telephone close by at all times when you or your family is using a pool, and you should share safety instructions with any family, friends, and neighbors who will be nearby your pool. It also is not a bad idea to learn how to perform CPR on children and adults, and to keep those skills updated regularly. You should also install and use a lockable safety cover on your pool, install door alarms, and install window guards on any windows that are facing a pool.
